PENANG'S ATTRACTIONS
PENANG HILL
Standing at 833m above sea level, Penang Hill is one of the oldest colonial hill station established by the British during their time in Malaysia. Explored in the late 18th century, a horse trail was cut by the Waterfall Gardens (present-day Penang Botanic Gardens) to the summit of the hilly spine of Penang, allowing the British to escape from the chaos of George Town to the colder climate on the hill. Take the iconic funicular train to catch magnificent views of the lowlands below from various vantage points on the hilltop.
BEACHES
Penang beaches have long been renowned as amongst the most alluring in the country, drawing endless streams of tourists and locals any time of the year. Amongst these are the Tanjung Bungah, Batu Ferringhi and Teluk Bahang beaches. Aquatic recreational activities such as parasailing, jet skiing, and windsurfing are available at certain spots along some of these beaches.
UNESCO HERITAGE CITY
Once part of the British colony from the late 1700s, Penang still has many well-preserved heritage buildings in George Town, its capital city, which remain standing today, albeit some with refurbishments and it has, thus, been accorded a listing as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.
PENANG STREET ART
Stroll through the streets of George Town to discover a collection of specially-designed street art on old buildings at various spots around the heritage zone. The collection of street art, designed by London-trained Lithuanian artist, Ernest Zacharevic, is popular with photographers as props for candid and selfie-shots.
STREET FOOD GALORE
Ranked by CNN Travel as one of the top ten street food cities in Asia in 2013 and by Lonely Planet as the top culinary destination in 2014, Penang has arguably one of the most diverse local cuisines and delicacies that any adventurous tourist would want to experience. Commonly referred to as hawker food, Penang street food are available at road-side stalls and coffee shops. The street food in Penang owes its uniqueness to its multicultural society. Prices are significantly lower than in restaurants and having a meal at one of these spots can truly be an experience in itself.
